Surry Route

Prior to the approval of this demonstration by the Virginia Department of Rail and Transportation (VDRT), residents of Surry County had no bus transportation for its commuter employees, students, and shoppers to get to greater Williamsburg. Employers, entertainment, restaurants, shopping, and major medical service centers.

In 2006, Surry County Board of Supervisors authorized a local contribution of $5,900 as an expression of its interest, to fund a service demonstration of the need to provide rural bus service between Surry County and Williamsburg, James City County, and the Bruton District of York County.

On January 18, 2007, VDRT approved a Demonstration Grant of $112,000 to assist Surry County and Williamsburg Area Transport (WAT) aas partners to provide rural bus transportation between Surry County and the greater Williamsburg area. The State’s interest is to reduce congestion at State Routes 10 and 31, limit Scotland Ferry space needs, and provide a seamless connection between Surry County with public transit to the greater Williamsburg area.

Williamsburg Area Transport was named to administer measure, and manage the Demonstration.
